Remington 783 Walnut - Here's what you need to know: If you're looking for a shotgun that gets the job done without breaking the bank, go for the Remington 783.
For years, people assumed that high-quality rifles must be expensive. In recent years, arms companies have proven that this is not necessarily the case. The Remington Model 783 Bolt-Action Rifle is one of the cheapest rifles competing for the throne as the best budget hunting rifle on the market. Let's break down the details.
Remington 783 Walnut
It doesn't really matter how good a rifle is as long as it shoots straight. Fortunately, the Model 783 can shoot accurately—extremely accurately. Despite the barrel showing any tool marks, the rifle consistently hit groups of three at 100 yards per inch. For a hunting shotgun, this is impressive accuracy. When properly aimed, the Model 783 had no problem hitting targets out to 300 yards. The key to accuracy in rifles is stiffness - eliminate twisting, bending or twisting of the gun when firing and the bullet will fly straight. The Model 783's minimal space above the barrel nut, as well as the magnum profile barrel, contribute to the 783 being a solid weapon that shoots at a fraction of the price of other weapons.
Husqvarna Long Rifle
I didn't encounter any mechanical problems while testing the Model 783. The Remington 783 is entirely made in the USA with a clean finish (especially for an inexpensive rifle). One version of the rifle comes with a nylon fiber reinforced synthetic stock, while the other (more expensive) version comes with a walnut stock. A walnut stock is more durable, but a synthetic stock will do if needed. The muffler screw was tight, but I expect the screw to loosen a bit with use. Overall, the 783 has proven to be very reliable in my testing, and I haven't noticed any issues reported by testers or reviewers.
The 783's synthetic stock is the strongest of comparable rifles. The plastic is durable, and the Supercell back panel is spongy (although some people have complained that it's too firm for their preference). The high and latch protection comes in two positions (safe and fire). I found that the fuse is not as comfortable as the narrow fuse (a fuse where the fuse moves up and down instead of clicking back and forth). The screw (spring-loaded with one-way release) comes with a smooth grip which I find easy to use. The operation went smoothly. Unfortunately, the molded plastic rods seemed cheap (and more likely to break than steel). The Model 783 may not be as pleasant to shoot as the rifle, but the rifle handled well and (in my opinion) aimed.
The Model 783 trigger is different. The Model 783 ships with a 5.5 lb trigger weight, but with the adjustable CrossFire trigger system, this weight can be reduced (according to Remington) to as little as 2.5 lbs. I couldn't get this trigger light (only 3 lbs., 12 oz.), but the adjustability of the trigger is impressive for a rifle at this price. The trigger itself felt tight and light, instead of the heavy, hard feel many cheap hunting or survival rifles have. On the other hand, the trigger guard was plastic (not very strong) and had a strange shape (trapezoid). Overall, Remington did a great job with this trigger.
The Model 783 features a detachable box magazine that holds four rounds. The magazine is part plastic, part steel, and the most important parts of the magazine are the metal parts. Loading the magazine was easy and I had no problems getting the cartridges into the camera. The magazine itself was quickly and naturally loaded into the body. I had no problems with the magazine falling out or being seated incorrectly. In fact, magazine retention and release was better than any comparable rifle. Chambered in 30-06 (perhaps the best hunting caliber), the Model 783 is a repeating rifle. This means that to load the next round into the chamber, the shooter must move the breech forward on the side of the rifle to fire again (rather than gas pushing a previously ejected round into the chamber). This makes the gun more accurate because there is less gas in the gun.

The Model 783 is 42 inches long and weighs 7 pounds, 10 ounces. (empty with magazine installed). With the rings, shotgun shell, loaded magazine, and sling added, the weapon should have a field weight of 9 ¼ pounds. This length and weight is average for a hunting rifle.
The 783 is equipped with a Supercell recoil pad. Remington claims to reduce recoil by 54 percent. I found the folder enough to take the sharp edge of a 30-06 shotgun, but others found it too stiff for their comfort. The comfort of the backplate depends on your personal decision. Overall, the rifle itself is a smooth shooter for the 30-06. The weight of the weapon helps absorb some of the impact. Overall, the Model 738's feedback control is the same as or better than its competitors.
The price is the 738's best selling point. For just $399, you get a reliable hunting rifle at a bargain price. This gun is often as accurate and reliable as more expensive rifles. You may be wondering how Remington cuts costs by making such an effective weapon. More expensive rifles generally have better finishes and more metal parts than the Model 738. However, these features do not affect the weapon's accuracy or reliability, so Remington is able to make a bare, functional rifle for less than most. Speaking of accuracy, the standard scope on the Model 738 is not the best scope. I recommend switching to the Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 - a great choice for hunters.
The Remington Model 783 Bolt-Action Rifle is an excellent hunting rifle for those on a budget. Here are some features that make it stand out:
