I stumbled upon Rem 783 in December 2015 more out of boredom than anything specific. With so many new plastic and awesome hunting rifles littering the shelves, this was the only gun I didn't spend much time with and was pretty much given away by my local Canadian Tire. The icing on the cake was the perks offered by Rem.
I got one in 243 for a winter "hunting" rifle project. Given the current state of the Rem 700, I wasn't expecting much. Wow, am I surprised.
The first thing that attracted me was how smooth and easy it was to ride the bike out of the box. Aside from a few BR-style actions, almost everything else is a heavy bolt-on as you struggle to compress the firing pin spring and advance the sleeve up the slide ramp into the bore groove.
The initial lifter feels like a spring, so the 783 almost feels like a chicken on a shutter bolt. almost as if he had a helper to move the handle of the screw. Having seen this type of bolt action in historic rifles, I know that this is a feature that really helps speed up the bolt cycle. Some of the fastest-acting rifles are bolt-actions from the First World War.

I turned the bolt fast and hard, trying to secure it. Pushing it in different directions while moving it forward is simple enough to allow for a variety of custom actions, and the 783 moved smoothly and quickly. The screw head is anti-seize and it really works.
The primary and secondary ear surfaces of the bolt and action are well formed, and the bolt handle is properly fitted to the bolt body. I didn't see any problem with getting quite a bit of toast.
Examination of the body of the bolt reveals that it is smooth, slightly cut, and bluish in color. This texture is almost impossible to get on the receiver wall (unlike the "paint" found on many SPS 700's). A light coat of dry or wet lube and the bolt body will slide smoothly.
Yes, you can run on dry lube...the spray teflon lube you can find at industrial suppliers can be the cat's meow when running in very dusty environments or crawling through dirt.

The twist on the bolt body is popular for its dirt-repellent look and feel. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way, and the bolt body, with its many helical grooves, tends to drag on the receiver, especially in the bridge area. A feature I don't want to spend more money on unless special care is taken to make sure it doesn't have negative effects. Clones based on Rem 700 do not always respond well to this function. Even the savages.
The 783 uses a floating bolt head, and many who have followed my exploits with Savage/Stevens actions know that this can make for an excellent shooting machine without much fuss. For the most part, these bolt heads look like something straight out of a Wild parts bin, except Rem Wild has removed various oddities.
The 783 extractor has an angle that works with the ejector to rotate the cases at an upward angle. Wild is "flat" against the receiver and ejected charges can hang. I have run many dummy rds with the 783 and have yet to hang up while shooting. I have placed the rifle in various positions, such as with the port straight up (if shooting left-handed), and the cartridge ejects the action without issue.
This floating screw head has several positive advantages, including the ability to maintain positive lock even when locked elsewhere in the screw body. I can't get into the engineering other than to say that the floating bolt head locks properly in the front of the receiver and allows the other bolts to move without affecting the harmonics. It allows for bike lanes and over bridges, and a tight lock that is easy to cycle, but shoots accurately.

The fired cartridges have no leaks, so the bolt faces, locking lugs and chamber are in true shape. The accuracy of this factory barrel was surprisingly good.
Update 11-16-Feb Replaced bolt between 243rd and 308th rifles. They fit and work perfectly and the surface is the same. Must be comfortable with modern CNC machining and tolerances. My rifle bolts change between guns. If you have spare screws for little or no cost, great.

When I tried to remove the bolt to look inside, I was surprised to find that this bolt does not use the traditional Rem 700 threaded bolt casing. The 783 actually uses a quick release format...turn the lever 1/2 turn and the whole assembly can be removed.

Full firing pin, full firing pin spring..well made, nice solid looking parts. The current trend of lowering the cost of entry-level hunting rifles has resulted in this important area being "clumped up"...not a good thing and certainly not designed for longevity. The 783 has a traditional style that will last a very long time. I could do all the maintenance on the assembly as is, so I didn't take it apart any further.
The alum coating not only creates a positive scratch on the back of the screw, but also protects the interior from dirt. If some come in, there's plenty of room to shake or blow. I think this setup will work well in the field.
Upon inspecting the fireplace assembly, I was struck by the shape and size of the fireplace. This is a necessary metal block. Looking into the receiver, the trigger is also a large square block that is well mounted on the race track. The last time I saw this type of setup was on WW1 events, including the P series Enfields.
This is a very strong and positive setting, and no matter how hard you hit the bolt, the lever section will not slide over the trigger slide. An all too common problem with the Rem 700 and some trigger pull weights that are significantly reduced.

I pushed the 783 bolt very hard, far more than I was likely to need while shooting, and it still didn't come out. After a little use, an inspection of the lever and trigger reveals that the amount of contact is enormous by today's standards. This is a reassuring setup as I may not be using this contact...maybe if the trigger arm fails completely?
Unlike WW2 actions that used a two-stage trigger to reduce trigger pull slippage to pull the lever down, the new 783 Crossfire trigger breaks remarkably cleanly, like a single stage. So you get a modern trigger pull with huge old contacts... Nice.
When you see a trigger, the first thing you think of is the Savage Accutrigger. It shares a safety panel in the center of the trigger shoe that must be depressed to allow the trigger to move and fire... and the similarities end there.
The Crossfire solves the real problem of a battery that can be removed by moving the trigger without moving the safety button back. Now it is necessary to partially replace the action to turn on the thrust. Obviously, having a loaded r in the chamber is not ideal for dealing with a gun.

This is especially important if you're crawling around and something gets caught on the trigger and causes the Accutrigger to lock up. Now you're wasting time trying to solve a problem that may not yield any positive results until you pull the trigger.
