The shotgun has shed its skin forever to become something new - a small arms, special forces, home howitzer and military tool. Recently it has been nicknamed "tactical", although in the right hands it has always been. However, the Remington 870 as a tactical device is perhaps one of its most popular forms at the moment.

Of the 30 variations currently in production, a full quarter of the 870s can be considered tactical in nature. But what exactly does that mean? Tactics, like beauty, are partly in the eye of the beholder. However, we can narrow it down to a few key features that are most often looked for when buying a tactical shotgun:

Of course, you can use some accessories like a sling system or improved sights, maybe rails. Despite the convenience of these features, they cannot become a tactical rifle. They are an easy icing to add to a gun that is already tactical in nature. Also, sticking to the three features above opens up the field for some great rifles that are great in a tactical role, even if they aren't marketed as such.

It's Not Just For Silly Hunting

So, with a loose definition in hand, here are four of the best Remington 870 tactical options available today. They hit almost every price point and cover almost every application. Best of all, they're ready to perform as soon as you roll off the hill.

Plain and simple, when it comes to Remington 870 tactical shotguns, Home Defense is a knockout. There are cheaper 870s out there, but none of them are tuned to stand out like this one.

In particular, its 6-round tubular magazine - two more than the standard 870 - gives you more than enough firepower to handle anything beyond a Hun siege. Plus, it's configured for close range success with compact 18 ½ barrels and a fixed cylinder suppressor. The gun's 7.5-pound weight also makes it practical while maintaining manageable 12-gauge recoil, especially if you opt for 3-inch cases.

With a matte blue finish on the metal components and a satin finish on the stock, the home defense has a Prohibition-era intimidation factor. However, there is a catch - aiming devices. Equipped with a single brass front bead, the Home Defense is not designed for precision work. A situation that can be remedied given the many modern range upgrades. Also, a little more aggressive texturing, at least on the front end, would make it easier to manipulate. MSRP: $420

Convert A Remington 870 Into A Tactical Shotgun

When it comes to Remington 870 tactical options, this model is what usually comes to mind. Widely used by law enforcement agencies, the Express Tactical comes out of the box with almost everything you need for a reliable defensive handgun and a little more.

Probably something more is the extended ported Tactical Rem Choke. The transmission is tight, helping to tame some of the recoil of the 7.5-pound pump, especially if you're using 3-inch bushings. But the door hacking configuration is a bit over the top. Also, it basically makes an 18.5 inch barrel a 20.5 inch barrel.

On the plus side, the shotgun is quick to aim with a fully adjustable front sight and KSS Ghost Ring front sight. The system is proven, and once you get the hang of it, few other iron sights capture targets as quickly or intuitively. Optical Sight: A 1913-length Picatinny rail runs atop the 870 receiver and is slotted and drilled to mount the scope. It also comes with swivels that really emphasize its tactical nature. The synthetic forearm is well knurled and gives you a solid grip to shift the shotgun through the 6+1 capacity in no time.

There is a 6-position stock model that comes with a pistol grip, for the same price as the Express Tactical, and slightly cheaper, dressed in a Magpul stock. Both end up falling short of the original when range is considered. MSRP: $601

Chewing ammo like crazy, there is no Remington 870 tactical model that shoots faster than the DM Magpul. Unless you've been on an extended vacation in a hostile gun country, you already know that DM stands for "detachable magazine"—a weapon novelty. The new configuration might turn the noses of some shotgun purists. However, the system excels at what it was designed to do - make the pump fill faster than ever before.

At a safe bet, the gun could chew through its 6+1 capacity (3-round mags are also available) for half the proven barrel mag 870. Let's face it, that's a lot of firepower. There's also an element of versatility as you can switch to different loads in the blink of an eye.

Is this a deal with the devil? To some extent, since it changes the balance and forces you to choke in the forearm or have a chance to hit the magazine drop forward. This is undesirable not only because your hand will sting, but also because you will not eject the magazine.

From a purely defensive standpoint, the DM Magpul makes the most sense of all the new box models. Comes with ghost ring rear sight, front sight, Rem Tactical silencer and Picatinny rail. Also, the Magpul furniture is top notch, with an SGA stock and grip. The stock is especially good because the length of pull is adjusted using a spacer system. The most important point with DM's new design is the price; that's a pretty penny for an 870 - even one with a box magazine. MSRP: $799

As far as Remington 870 tactical shotguns go, this might be the nicest. There's something silly about stainless steel, even if it's ersatz stainless steel.

Special Purpose Marine is definitely the best choice for boat owners, those in wet climates and those who live near or on salt water. However, naval service is not a prerequisite to being a Special Forces Marine. The nickel finish has excellent corrosion resistance along with a great appearance. In turn, the gun should excel anywhere that routine maintenance might not be a chore—in an RV, cabin, truck, or trunk.

Additionally, the 18.5-inch barreled shotgun comes with a few nice touches like swivels and a 6+1 capacity. Where the Marine loses points is its targeting system, which is a single bead. Fast and relatively accurate, it won't hold a gun in most melees. But again, this comes at the cost of surgical precision. MSRP: $841
