Glock 19c Vs 19 - Glock released the Gen 4 series of pistols in early 2010, which addressed some caliber durability issues in the frame and brought some mild exterior changes. Some seven years later we present the next generation in the Glock line. The Gen 5 differences are similarly mild on the surface, but there are some interesting changes that aren't immediately obvious.
I have been using my Gen 5 Glock 19 since the end of August and have put about 4,000 rounds through it. I ran it for static accuracy and dynamic defensive exercises out of stealth, with and without a light attached to the rail. I also spent time with it disassembled, familiarizing myself with the internal changes and problems with spare parts (since Glocks are fun hobby kits).
Glock 19c Vs 19
For the most part, the Gen 5 Glock 19 is just a Glock 19, but there are some interesting and odd changes to consider. There are also some caveats that first-time buyers should be aware of. I hope to cover most of everything here, but keep in mind that this information has been used for less than 2 months, several times a week. More time can tell more stories.

Much of this review deals with Gen 5 differences from previous versions and user issues specific to Gen-5 (for carrying, shooting, accessories, etc.). For a more basic review of the Glock 19, I encourage you to read my Glock 19 Gen 4 review here (“Review: Glock 19 Gen 4 – After 80,000 rounds”).
Also note that the photos shown in this article do not show new factory pistols. Rather, they are pictures of the guns of someone who uses them heavily a few days each week. They tend to beat a bit.
The first and best reason to consider this pistol is because it is a Glock 19. Probably the best all-purpose pistol ever made. It is large enough to be a work pistol and offers functional accuracy and significant magazine capacity while being small and light enough for everyday concealed carry.
Additionally, one cannot ignore the excellent reliability record that Glock pistols offer. In my own experience, I have fired over 100,000 rounds through Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock pistols, and the only malfunctions I have ever experienced were due to failed non-Glock parts and poor Cerakote work. With stock components, a Glock pistol is nearly flawless in operation, even under difficult conditions.

For Gen 5 in particular, you may want to consider the new Glock 19 for a few compelling reasons. First, the slide lock lever is now double sided. So if you are left handed, switch the mag release to the right and you have a full left handed pistol. For those of you who like Glock pistols but not the grip finger grooves, the Gen 5 has a front band with a flat face on the grip. No customization required.
Gen 5 brings very little new to the download experience, with 2 notable exceptions. The Glock 19 has always been a soft shooting pistol, easy to handle, and has always had an accuracy of over 99.9% of marksmanship. New to this experience is the new Gen 5 barrel and flat front grip band.
Having done a lot of shooting with Gen 3 and 4 Glocks, I find the lack of finger grooves striking. I'm used to the handle squeezing to fill my strong hand and now it feels different. I don't mind the difference, but since the finger grooves fit my hand perfectly, I miss this gun. I know many people never liked them, so many will be happy with this change.

Forget The Glock 17 Or 19: The Glock 18 Is A Real Life Machine Gun
The new rifle profile should be twice as accurate at longer distances (4" groups at 50 yards, Glock claims). I'm not good enough to get 4" groups at 50 yards yet, but I found that my groups were at 25 yards significantly smaller with the Gen 5 compared to my Gen 4 shots. I can't say for sure, but I would guess that it is because of the more accurate barrel.
The Gen 5 trigger may be a bit better feeling than the Gen 4, but that's subjective and hard for me to say. The Gen 5 trigger assembly is completely different from the Gen 4, shaped like the Glock 43. It has a "New York" trigger spring that uses a polymer spring retainer and a compression spring (instead of an extension spring that holds the rod hanging on the hook. crossbar).. I tried a 3.5lb plug and felt no pressure weight difference. So I tried a 2lb link and got the 4.5lb press I expect in my pistols. Interesting.
Most of the 9mm ammo I ran through the gun is 115gr bullets, but I have rounds from a variety of Federal Premium 147gr Hydra-Shok JHP, Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P GDHP, Federal Premium 124gr HST JHP , Hornady Critical Defense 115gr, and Hornady Critical Duty 135gr...all with perfect performance.
I haven't tested any in ~4,000 rounds with my Gen 5 Glock 19. The only notable issue I can mention is that in the first 1000 rounds I sometimes felt a slight hesitation as the action engages the first round from a magazine has Instead of the typical sound/feel of the slide going into battery, there was an occasional "ka-chunk" that felt like a slight hesitation with the round chambered. This anomaly disappeared after about 1000 rounds and never affected the gun's performance. All rounds chambered and fired.
What Is Your Favorite Glock Model And Why?
As with any other Glock pistol, the transition from the Gen 5 G19 trigger guard to the grip is quite angular and typically uncomfortable for the middle finger of the strong hand when shooting. This is why I suggest that EVERY Glock pistol should have a Dremmel tool on the side and bottom where the trigger guard meets the grip to create a smooth rounded and tapered profile there. Other than that issue, the Glock 19 is very comfortable. There are some who disagree and find that the G19 or any Glock pistol is fine without this small change. With this change I find the Gen 5 Glock 19 very comfortable. Without it, useless. I personally would never own a Glock that wasn't set up like this. It would definitely make a nice Gen 6 upgrade.
The Glock 19 is by no means fast and the recoil is very easy for one to handle. The location of the magazine release is good and I only have to change my grip slightly to get my medium sized hands in position to trigger it (as I do on any pistol that is made). Even with Glock's minimalist slide-lock lever, my grip often interferes with the lever and I find that the pistol won't open on the last round of a magazine from time to time. It is in no way the fault of the weapon. It's all me.
Although compact, the Glock 19 is larger than some in this classification. However, with a good and well-made holster, it is easily hidden in many places on your belt, in the belt or outside. I carry a Glock 19 with a light in the appendix position every day and never have a pressure problem.
Note, however, that concealment is largely managed by the case and its configuration. Most holsters made for concealed carry are poorly made and not shaped to angle the gun properly to aid in concealment. Be careful!
What Gen Is My Glock
The Glock 19's fifteen-plus-one capacity is plenty, especially for a compact. It's no mistake that the Glock 19 sets the standard for size-to-capacity ratio in the pistol world.
The Gen 5 Glock 19's largely unlubricated slide comes in a black Melonite finish, which is then treated with an nDLC coating. The result is a darker and more durable finish. I really like this new finish and the aesthetic it provides. I can't say if it is more durable. However, I can say that repeatedly dropping on gravel in practice will scratch the slide and peel off spots of the finish, as seen here:
The scratches seen above came from several dozen repetitions of the "wounded wing" drill, shown here:
The polymer frame is very similar to the Gen 4, except the grip is slightly open on the sides to mimic a magwell (it's only a mockup) and the finger grooves on the front strap are gone. The Gen 5 also only has one pin near the locking block instead of the 2 pins common in previous generations. Perhaps because of this change, the frame is very slightly wider and very slightly taller than the Gen 4. The grip texture is identical to the Gen 4 and can be repaired unless you have wet or bloody hands (so make sure your Glock if it's a gun).
