He created and starred in the children's television series Captain Kangaroo, which ran from 1955 to 1984 and was the longest-running children's television program in the country at the time.
After graduating from Forest Hills High School in Queens, New York, during World War II in 1945, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve, but was still in the United States when Japan surrendered. He attended Fordham University under the GI Bill and attended Hillsdale College for several years.
The network television show started shortly after the war. Howdy Doody, the first show that premiered on NBC in 1947, was one of the first. started on January 3, 1948.

Kishan plays Clarabell the Clown, a taciturn August clown who communicates by blowing several horns attached to his belt. One horn means "yes"; two means "no". Clarabell regularly sprays Buffalo Bob Smith with a soda bottle and pulls pranks. Keeshan resigned from this post in 1952 and was replaced.
By September 21, 1953, Keeshan was back on WABC-TV (New York City) with a new children's show, Fun Time. He played Coney the Clown, and this time he spoke.
Later that year, in addition to Fun Time, Keeshan started Tinker's Workshop, a show for school children in which he played Uncle Tinker.
Inspired by Tinker's Workshop, Keeshan and longtime friend Jack Miller took the idea of Captain Kangaroo to the CBS network, which was looking for new ways to watch children's television. CBS approved the show, and Keeshan was cast in the lead role when it premiered on CBS on October 3, 1955.

Kishan described his character as based on the "warm relationship between grandparents and children". The show was an instant success, and he worked as a host for almost three years.
