The site was marked in 1869 by Major General Philip H. Sheridan, who led a campaign to stop Native American tribes from attacking settlements on the Texas-Kansas border. The post was gradually changed from cavalry to field artillery. The Field Artillery School was established at Fort Sill in 1911 and continues to operate today as the Army Field Artillery School. Fort Sill is one of four Army basic combat training sites that have played a role in every major conflict in the United States since 1869.

The closest Amtrak station to Fort Sill is in Oklahoma City, about 85 miles away. Alternatively, you can take a Greyhound bus from nearby Lawton to Oklahoma City and most other major cities.
The closest airport to Fort Sill is the Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport. It's a fairly small airport in terms of takeoffs and landings, but it's only a few miles from Fort Sill's front gate. The regional airport is served by American Eagle, with daily round-trip flights connecting passengers to nearby Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Upon arrival, all permanently assigned Soldiers report to the Welcome Center with their DA Form 31 and PCS order form. The Welcome Center reception is staffed 24 hours a day. Staff will sign soldiers on leave, assist with housing arrangements, and give instructions on when to return for processing. Installation in process takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for all permanent party soldiers; usually completed within two days. Most processing is done in Building 4700, including ID, Finance, Housing, Vehicle Registration and ACS. Various agencies inform newcomers about programs, assistance, and services available at the facility, such as: Housing/Government Housing, Fort Sill Credit Union, Fort Sill National Bank, MEDDAC (Record Extraction), DENTAC, Finance, and Travel.

Fort Sill Commissary lets you save your hard-earned money when you shop for groceries at the commissary. In-store amenities and features include an ATM, bakery, deli, special orders for produce trays and custom cakes, bagless checkout and more. Commissary is open Monday to Friday from 0930 to 2000, Saturday from 0800 to 1800 and Sunday from 1200 to 1800.
Fort Sill Exchange offers a price comparison program that guarantees the best price in town for up to 14 days after purchase (some exceptions apply). The exchange is open Monday to Friday from 1000 to 1830, Saturday from 1000 to 1830 and Sunday from 1100 to 1600.

Fort Sill Museum Opens Native American Gallery
Soldiers and their dependents are authorized to receive personal mail through a joint mailroom installed until they establish a permanent address (usually 30 days). Use the following address: Soldier/Spouse/Children's Name, Rank/Soldier's Name, 6607 NW Fort Sill Blvd., Fort Sill, OK 73503-1899. The official mail center is open from 0830 to 1630 Monday to Friday and 0930 to 1130 Saturday, closed on Sundays and federal holidays.
The Fort Sill Finance Office is open Monday to Friday from 0800 to 1600. The office has resources to help you understand and manage your finances, including one-on-one counseling to help your family prepare financially, from basic planning to long-term investing.
The Fort Sill Legal Assistance Office provides legal advice and assistance to eligible clients, including active duty, retired and dependents of military ID holders. The office is where you need to go to prepare a will or review other legal documents, including powers of attorney, living wills, bills of sale, simple affidavits, leases, name changes, uncontested divorces, and more. Call for a few hours or make an appointment. Power of attorney and notary services are available without an appointment.
Nye Library is your one-stop shop for research, communication resources and entertainment. The library offers many services: WiFi, photocopiers, study areas, free faxing and scanning, tablets with games for children, DVDs, language resources and a large selection of books (audio and physical). The library is open Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1000 to 1700 and Wednesday and Thursday from 1000 to 1800.
